A Radical Tradition - Eine radikale Tradition

Last week, with my colleague and good friend the printmaker and fellow tutor Andrew Baldwin, I set off to Manchester to install the exhibition that I have been curating these last couple of years, 'A Radical Tradition'. We arrived late in a rainy city and after finding our way to the Manchester Central Library, we offloaded the works. After that it was simply a matter of finding a decent pub and enjoying a bite to eat and a good pint (or two).

The exhibition space, the first floor exhibition hall, is superb. We spent five hours on Friday putting the work on the walls after overcoming one or two technical challenges and arranging the 'hang'. The work looked fantastic and is a credit to Aberystwyth University's museum staff who matted and framed, labelled and packed the selection of 58 photographs (especial credit must go to Neil Holland our Senior Curator). The exhibition is curated from our own museum collection of vintage photographs as well as several new darkroom prints that I made from our collection of negatives of Hans Saebens and Erich Retzlaff. In addition, the exhibition included 14 digital copies of the work of Hans Retzlaff from the Ludwig-Uhland-Institut für Empirische Kulturwissenschaft, at the University of Tübingen (thanks to our own Chris Iliff for printing these files so beautifully).

The exhibition runs until the 30th April and then will be shown as follows

Aberystwyth University, School of Art Galleries, Aberystwyth, Wales - 17 February - 1 May 2020.

Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar, Saarbrücken, Germany - June 2020 (final dates to be confirmed) .
