Flashes from the Past....

I cant believe it's been over eight years since I made my first experiments with 16mm film. This film 'Pearl' (2008) was the transition from my collage experiments to 'moving collage' using stop motion, found footage and physical mark-making on the film itself. Meaning is hard to pin down except that it was meant to be suggestive of the unconscious and is (for those who recognise them!) laced with esoteric symbols...I may yet return to 16mm film experiments...

Another book I recently acquired is Deutsche Heimat in Afrika by the photographer Ilse Steinhoff published in 1939 by Wilhelm Limpert Verlag. In the pre-war period women had successfully carved out careers as professional photographers and Steinhoff was one example of the 'new woman'. As a travel photographer Steinhoff was an example of the new freedom women were enjoying in a profession that had recently opened up to them during the Third Reich. Steinhoff was glamorous and talented and often posed herself juxtaposed against 'exotic' peoples or locations. One of the interesting things here for me are the portraits executed in that tightly cropped style popularised by photographers like Erna

Shadows from Atlantis: Photography, Pagans and Nazis

This presentation (with voiceover) is based on a talk I gave at Treadwell's Bookshop, Bloomsbury, London. Treadwell's is a gem of a bookshop specialising in magic, esotericism and the occult. The talk was delivered to a full house on the evening of Friday 3rd June (2016). The presentation explains the journey that led me from an obscure National Socialist wartime publication to a forgotten archive of photographs in Germany. In it I discuss how the photographs were part of a quest by theorists, researchers and political figures to show the 'Germanic' peasant as a pagan, earth-based ‘volk’, who were the inheritors of the bloodline of a Nordic Atlantis.

A new addition to my collection of German photography books arrived today - Menschen der Scholle 1936 (roughly - 'people of the earth'). A book of beautiful portraits of peasant 'types' from Germany by the photographers I am examining.
